About Us

Who and what is LGBT+ Reading?

LGBT+ Reading supports, represents, and brings together the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and plus (other sexual and gender minorities) students of the University of Reading! We are both a society and a liberation & representation group run for and by LGBT+ students. We're an inclusive group – anyone who identifies as a sexual and/or gender minority is welcome to join us – and we don't have membership fees or a definitive list of members.

Anyone who identifies as a sexual and/or gender minority is automatically a part of LGBT+ Reading, and therefore has the right to influence the focus and running of our organisation. Our primary goals are to work to create a social place for people that define as LGBT+ within/around the University, as well as to campaign for the rights and increased visibility of LGBT+ peoples within our local and global communities.

The Committee

Part-time Officer

Hi, my name’s Caroline and I’m super proud to be the Part-time Officer for our LGBT+ Group this year! In particular, this means that I organise and front the campaigns that we support. I’m also a third-year English Lit student, I come from Leeds, and I have a lot of feelings about food & poetry (at the same time).

President

I’m Zanna, a third year Biomedical Sciences undergraduate, and the President of the LGBT+ group. My main role is to coordinate and oversee the LGBT+ activities that occur throughout the year and make sure everyone is having the good times. I love music and video games, I play guitar and my favourite activities include eating carbs and watching chick flicks (no judgement).

Male welfare representative

I’m Liam, I’m 23, and I am the male welfare rep this year. With the rest of the welfare team we are here all year round to help newcomers and old favourites stay happy during your time with us in the University LGBT+ community. I am a postgraduate here at Reading in the second year of my PhD. I am from Manchester and I also did my undergraduate degree there at the awesome Uni. I tick many cliché boxes as I love baking, dancing and I am currently having classical singing training. Added extras: Good listener; Haagen Dazs wins over Ben and Jerry’s any day (I know, controversial); generally can tell you more about classical music than the Top 40 chart. Hopefully isn’t as boring as he sounds.

Female welfare representative

Hi I'm Charlotte, the Female Welfare rep for this year for the wonderful LGBT+ family. I'm a second year Classics student and interested in student activism as well as debating films/current affairs/anything really! so feel free to chat to me about anything!

Social Representative

Hey there fabulous people! I’m Sahadev although most people know me as Sed. Along with Ashleigh I’m Social Sec and therefore get to organise loads of super fun events!! Those people that know will probably tell you I’m a Party Animal and yeah on the drinking socials I may get you to down the odd drink, do a shot or a strawpeodo. But I’m also amazingly organised, will plan something for everyone (drinking and non drinking) and just generally make this year FABULOUS!!!! (like all the committee).

Social representative

Hey there! I'm Ashleigh and along with Sahadev, I will be your social secretary for the year. My job will be to arrange the movie nights, party times, meals out, nights in London (Soho), Student National Pride and many more events! There will be something for everyone so I hope you all attend and get mingling with your fellow LGBT+ers!

Trans* representative

I'm Andy, I'm the Trans* rep for Reading LGBT+ and a third year Philosophy Student. I'm here to improve Transgender education in the University and provide support for anyone with gender concerns. Feel free to send me a message on Facebook about anything, I know how scary meeting everyone is for the first time, but I promise you'll love it!
